Mountaintop Removal Mining
The presentation by Lenny Kohm at the April 18th member meeting was a brutal
visual and emotional experience. Unless one sees the devastation, a mere
audio description won't do it. The sheer scope of landscape and streams
being destroyed is sickening and disheartening.
The single most glaring practice is that the enormous amount of rubble
generated from exploding these mountain tops is now not classified as waste,
compliments of the Bush Administration, allowing mining companies to fill
in previously protected stream beds.
Lenny said up front that he was looking for a new, less emotional movement
to get into, after having spent huge amounts of physical and emotional
energy in his previous campaigns, including Alaskan oil field drilling
and some other large projects out West. However this ecological nightmare
draws emotionalism out of any thinking being.
Representatives Frank Pallone and Christopher Shays have introduced legislation
that will amend the Clean Water Act to prohibit the practice of burying
our waterways - thereby curtailing mountaintop removal mining. Please write
a letter to your senators and representative and urge them to cosponsor
and support the Clean Water Protection Act (HR 2719), which would not allow
waste to be used for valley fill. Please see the following addresses.
