Turn out the Lights…
…for Earth’s Sake
Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, 2008, 8-9 pm
www.lightsoutakron.org
LightsOut Akron is a community-wide Akron pride event when residents, businesses and governments turn off their non-essential lighting for one hour. Start building the habit to reduce energy usage and help cut carbon emissions without noticeably affecting your lifestyle.
The world's scientists agree: Global warming is real, and we are just starting to feel the effects. But scientists also say we can curb global warming and its consequences -- if we take bold, comprehensive action now that adds up to an 80 percent cut in carbon emissions by 2050, or 2 percent a year. You can start with a simple step that can lead to a long-term pro-environmental habit.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Now is your chance to not only help assure that the planet stays healthy, it's a chance to see some real results from the contribution you make in Akron!
- Have a party! Make it fun with your own low-light party to celebrate Earth Day.
- Take the “2% Solution Pledge” to cut your carbon footprint by 2% per year.
- Turn off the lights…for Earth’s sake. One easy step to start a long-term, pro-environmental habit.

The Zoo has an ambitious conservation program underway, and has recently received the presitigous LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its new education center, the Komodo Kingdom. The Komodo Kingdom is the first building in Summit County and the fifteenth in Ohio to receive this honor. There are only two other zoos in the U.S. (Seattle and San Diego) with LEED certified buidlings.
The Seiberling Award will be presented at the Earth Day banquet, March 29, at the Mustard Seed Market. Proceeds from the dinner benefit the John and Better Seiberling Scholarship Fund at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park's Environmental Education Center and PTG's conservation projects.
