From the Chair

September/October 2009

NEO’s Efforts Pay Off Big Time

For those of you who missed it, we had a powerful outreach to Rep. Marcia Fudge in July. As a result of our efforts, Rep. Fudge signed on to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act, H.R.1310. Thanks to all who called and/or wrote Rep. Fudge! (Note to Rep. LaTourette – we’ll be calling you next.)

- AND -

We had a second “Action Alert” on the Drilling in State Parks issue, which is now, thanks to our efforts and those of other Ohio Sierra groups, completely defeated.

NEO SIERRA Recognized by Congress!

We are celebrating Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s statement entered into the Congressional Record touting the efforts of the Northeast Ohio Sierra Club to stop the use of coal! This was a result of our two anti-coal demonstrations last June 18th.

Kudos to our Coal Committee members for their efforts and achievements! The Committee members are: Bob Greenbaum, Glenn Campbell, Randy Cunningham, and Trey Howard. We are so proud! Contact Bob Greenbaum to get involved in this ongoing effort.

If you missed the actual document entered into the Congressional Record sent out via e-mail, check it out on our website at: www.ohio.sierraclub.org/northeast

Resolution Adopted

Our Executive Committee adopted a resolution that was recently presented by the Conservation Committee. This resolution supports the City of Cleveland’s Waterfront District Plan and opposes the Port of Cleveland’s current relocation plan which adversely impacts access to the lakefront and green space.

Copies of this resolution are available to hand out at tabling events or other appropriate venues. Contact Dave Dvorak or Gail Staba GStaba@nas.edu for copies of the resolution and/or to join their efforts!

NEO Sierra Group Goes Paperless!

We received thanks and gratitude for going paperless at the Ohio Chapter Executive Committee meeting on July 19th. We are the first group in Ohio to go paperless, saving our group and the chapter lots of money that can now be spent on environmental concerns. I suggested to the Executive Committee that Ohio be the first Sierra state to go paperless, a goal we should all be proud to work towards.

NEO Sierra Group owes a BIG THANK YOU to its Newsletter Committee for all their hard work making us the first Ohio group to go paperless! We’ll save money and leave trees standing in the forest thanks to their efforts. A BIG round of applause, please, for:

Calling All Local Issues

Do you know of a local environmental issue in need of attention? Do you have inside information on what's going on in your city or township? With over 5,000 members in Northeast Ohio we count on you to be the Club's eyes and ears of the region. While the Federal government and large corporations continue to wreak havoc on our environment, it is more important than ever before to act as watchdogs in our own backyards.

If you know of a local environmental issue in need of observation or action, please contact the Conservation Committee - Dennis Plank (216) 939-8229, or the Sierra Club phone message line at 440-843-7272.

Remember, no obstacle too great when passionate communities unite.

Activist Calling Instructions

For those new to calling state or federal representatives, it's easier and less confrontational than it sounds. You will never speak directly with your rep or senator - an aide will answer the phone, take brief notes plus your name and city (sometimes), and that's it.

When calling either state or federal government offices, you will not need to go into detail or defend your position. No one will ever argue with you. They may ask questions to clarify what issue you support or don't support. But it's usually as simple as saying: "Please let my rep know that I want him/ her to support Bill number XX" (if there is a number), or "green building standards in schools", or "more renewable energy"; or "I do not want the US to drill for oil in ANWR!" The staff taking the calls are there to receive your information and forward it on or to provide information you request. They will not question what you support or your beliefs. You will never know if they personally do not agree with you.

One phone call is a lot more important than you may think! A long-time aide in Washington explained that, if a congress person receives many calls at their office, the aide will actually call the congress person on their cell phone, even if they're on the floor of the Capitol, debating. When asked, "How many is a lot?" her response was, "About 20." Your one call can make a difference.
