(Ed Hauser, a friend and passionate environmental activist,
passed away suddenly in November. Ed is best known as the “Mayor
of Whiskey Island,” the man who tenaciously fought to preserve
natural lands along our Lake Erie shoreline - for all of us.)
One word fits the late Ed Hauser better than any other - guts.
There were no honor guards, flag-draped casket, 21-gun salute
nor military benefits for Ed. And yet, against nearly impossible
odds,
he fought harder and longer, often alone. The enemy - greed and
apathy, which has and always will threaten our country from within,
as insidiously as any danger from foreign shores. We Clevelanders,
as well as all Americans, have but one natural environment in
which to live. “Citizen Hauser” spent most of his
life on a crusade against a myriad of despoilers and truly deserves
the
title of patriot. My fervent hope is that we and our children
will pick up the torch Ed so selflessly carried.
In friendship,
Steve Gove
