Destructive Logging May Be Allowed in Ohio's Only National Forest
COLUMBUS - The US Forest Service will hold 10 public hearings around the
state to take comment on the future of the Wayne National Forest. The Forest
Service must revise the management plan for the Wayne, required by law every 10
to 15 years. The public hearings are the first step in preparing a new
Environmental Impact Statement for the revised management plan.
A central issue will be whether commercial logging, including clearcutting,
will be allowed to take place again in the Wayne National Forest. Commercial
logging of the Wayne has been stopped for the last 8 years. The Sierra Club is
calling for a permanent ban on commercial logging activities in the Wayne.
