Don’t lower Ohio River quality rules

I was pleased to read that the Metropolitan Sewer District finally unveiled their plans to repair failing sewer infrastructure – court-ordered plans, six months past due for public review (“Sewer district unveils plans, April 17).  However, I am displeased to learn of a proposal that may soon let MSD off the hook.

In June, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission will vote on a proposal to lower water quality standards for the Ohio River.  This “wet weather proposal” will permit more sewage to enter the river when it rains.  Lowering “wet weather” water quality standards for the Ohio and its tributaries will reduce the requirements for MSD to fix leaky sewers and keep raw sewage out of our water.

This proposal stinks.  I urge the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission to vote no to lower water quality standards for the Ohio River.
