Backpacking Tips
DAYHIKING TIPS
- Pack for both the expected and the unexpected
- Nylon/polyester blends and wool are better at repelling water
than "killer cotton"
- Hypothermia can occur at surprisingly warm temperatures if you
get wet, so bring extra clothes to ensure you'll stay warm
- Bring more water than you actually think you'll need

- 10 Essentials:
- Sunglasses
- Pocket knife
- Firestarter
- Matches in waterproof case
- First aid kit (with moleskin)
- Flashlight & spare bulb
- Map (inside a ziplock bag keeps it dry)
- Compass
- Extra food
- Extra clothing
- Also include:
- Head protection
- Rain coat/pants
- Toilet paper in ziplock bag
- Water bottles
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- Paper & pencil plus telephone money for emergencies in waterproof
container
- Garbage bag (goes over your daypack if it rains)
- Gloves (if needed)
- For the women: menstrual protection (and an Enquirer bag)
- Lunch/snacks
MIGHT ALSO WANT TO BRING FOR AFTER THE DAYHIKE:
Change of clothes (it will feel great if you get wet)
Extra shoes (with a plastic bag to put your muddy boots in)
