Requirements for Coming on a Sierra Club Backpacking
Trip
Be in Good Shape. If you haven't been on a regular
exercise program, a backpacking trip is the wrong place to find
out you're not in shape. To maintain a good level of fitness, you
should be performing cardiovascular exercise several times a week
throughout the winter. In addition, lower body strengthening exercises,
such as lunges and squats, build your leg muscles for hiking up
and down hills.
Each backpacking trip listed in the newsletter
has a numerical designation from 1 to 4 indicating how strenuous
the hiking will be. Know your ability level. If you're not sure
whether you are fit enough, talk to the trip leader and together
you can decide.
Be Self-Contained. As a backpacker, you're expected
to carry your own food and water, clothing, sleeping bag, tent and
stove. If you don't own a tent, stove or water treatment, talk to
the trip leader - he or she might be able to loan you the equipment
you need.
Where do Sierra Club Backpacking Trips go?
Some favorite spots are along the Appalachian
Trail, at Big South Fork National Recreational Area in Tennessee,
the Smokies, and national forest and wilderness areas in surrounding
states.
Group sizes range from 4 to 10, to minimize impact
on the environment and allow trip participants to experience a high
level of camaraderie with their fellow backpackers.
