Friday, April 18 -- German Village, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Time 7:00 PM. Join us for a walk through historic German Village. We will walk around the German Village neighborhoods and visit Frank Fetch Park. Meet at Schiller Park (Deshler and Jaeger). We will be walking about 3 miles. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for uneven walking surfaces. Flash light and light, reflective clothing is recommended. Sunday, April 20 -- Three Creeks Confluence Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. We will hike past the confluence of the park's namesake and enjoy the fauna found along the way. Wear hiking boots as conditions may be muddy or slick. Meet at the Confluence bulletin board by the restroom at 3669 Bixby Rd., Groveport. Bring a snack or lunch if hiking both sessions of 3 miles each. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, April 25 -- Scioto Audubon Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Join us for a walk starting from the Grange Insurance Audubon Center at the Scioto Audubon Metro Park. We will look for birds on the Whittier Peninsula, followed by a hike through the park, downtown, and the Brewery District. This is a nice hike blending nature with the city. Meet at the Audubon Center parking lot. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven walkways. The Audubon Center is located at 505 West Whittier Street in downtown Columbus. We will be walking about 3.5 miles, followed by an optional dinner after the hike. Contact leaders Avalon and David Espinoza at for further information.

 

Sunday, April 27 -- Great Seal State Park Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 4/5

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This state park takes its name from the emblem of Ohio which it helped to inspire. Great Seal is situated on the western edge of the Appalachian Plateau and offers views of the Scioto Valley to the west and south. This 9+ mile hike spans the southern region, the hilly Bunker Hill and Mt Ives Trails, and then extends northward to Rocky Knob. It is a strenuous hike on steep hills and ridge-tops. Bring water, lunch, suitable attire and meet at 9 AM behind Tim Hortons in the Great Southern Shopping Center on U.S 23 just north of I-270. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, May 2 -- Blendon Woods Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/3

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Time: 7:00 PM. Meet in the parking lot near the nature center. We will walk for about 3 miles in the woods with rolling hills. There is an optional dinner after the hike. Directions: I-270 to route 161 East, and follow the (brown) signs to the park, and bear left to reach the nature center parking lot. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, May 4 -- Downtown Columbus, Ratings: E/S 3/3

 

Time: 11:00 AM. This is a dog friendly hike. This 10 mile hike will take us through Victorian Village, the Short North, and the State House grounds, Columbus Commons, German Village, 1 the Whittier Peninsula and the Audubon Center. We will also walk along the Scioto Mile and visit the North Market for ice cream at the end of the walk. Meet at the Dennison Ave. parking lot at Goodale Park. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring lunch and water. Contact leader for further information.

 

Wednesday, May 7 -- Franklin Park, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 6:30 PM. Time:6:30pm Enjoy an hour long stroll through this scenic and historic park just 4 miles east of downtown Columbus. Meet inside the east entrance of the Conservatory located at 1777 E. Broad St. Come early for the Farmers market. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, May 9 -- Grove City, Ratings: E/S 1/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. We will meet at Grove City Library, 3359 Park Street, Grove City. The walk will start at the library and proceed through the local neighborhood. An optional dinner will take place after the hike. Contact leader for further information.

 

Saturday, May 10 -- Early Bloomers Walk, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 9:30 AM. This walk is intended as a group-instructional and discovery event of some 2 miles. We will stop continuously as we move about and give ourselves the time to explore, identify and appreciate the flora growing in this rich habitat. This scenic area of the Little Miami River / Clifton Gorge was the first in OH designated as a State as well as a National Scenic River. Bring water, snacks, field manual, appropriate attire and boots. Meet behind Bob Evans Restaurant at Westland Shopping Center (just east of I-270 and West Broad St.). Friday, May 16 -- Sharon Woods Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Meet in the Apple Ridge parking lot at 7 pm. We'll hike through woods, meadows, and around Schrock Lake. Although much of the terrain is flat, be prepared to navigate a few small and possibly muddy hills. Sharon Woods is located north of I-270 at 6911 Cleveland Avenue in Westerville. The Apple Ridge area is the first right from the main park road. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, May 18 -- Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This 6 to 8 hike will begin at scenic Clifton Gorge with many unusual natural sights along the Little Miami River. We'll also read about an incredible escape across the gorge by a member of Daniel Boone's party and . Bring lunch, water, and hiking boots, and meet behind Bob Evans Restaurant at Westland Shopping Center (just east of I-270 and West Broad St.). Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, May 23 -- Old Beechwold, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Meet at the Kroger parking lot in Graceland Shopping Center. Please park and gather to the west of the Kroger store so that we don't disrupt shoppers. We will hike about 3 miles in the Old Beechwold area. The hike will end with an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Please wear sturdy footwear as we may encounter some wet and muddy areas. Sunday, May 25 -- Conkle’s Hollow and Hocking Forest, Ratings: E/S 4/3

 

Time: 9:00 AM. Come join us on this hike in the Hocking Hills region. We will trek about 10 miles on different trails featuring picturesque areas of hemlocks, sandstone, limestone, and shale carved by erosion of the Appalachian Plateau. Bring water, lunch, suitable attire for muddy trails and meet behind McDonalds at Winchester Square Shopping Center, near US 33 and Gender Road. Contact leader for further information.

Sunday, June 1 -- Alum Creek State Park Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 3/3

 

Time: 11:00 AM. This is a dog friendly hike. Alum Creek State Park is just a 10 minute drive from our meeting place. This 9-mile hike will take us over a variety of terrains from wooded trails to open meadows, wetlands, beaches and a marina. Meet at 11:00 am at the west end of the Wal-Mart parking lot in North Pointe Plaza shopping center, which is on the east side of US 23 about 1/2 mile north of SR 750 (Powell Rd). Time: 7:00 PM. We will take a neighborhood walk through Grandview. Meet in the parking lot of the Grandview Library on First Ave., two blocks west of Grandview Ave. After the hike, we will have an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Contact leaders for further information.

 

Sunday, June 8 -- Burr Oak State Park, Ratings: E/S 4/5

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This hike of 9-11 miles will take us through some trails at Burr Oak, a valley area typical of the southeast wilderness of Ohio. Carved by erosion of the Appalachian Mountain foothills, it is replete with ridges, rock formations, lakes, and a variety of flora and wildlife. Historically, the area’s development stemmed from nearby water transportation hubs, mining industries, and settlements by Civil War veterans who accepted land in payment for services. Bring water, lunch, boots, suitable attire and meet behind McDonald's at Winchester Square Shopping Center, near US 33 and Gender Rd. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, June 13 -- Dog Hike and Pot Luck Whetstone Park., Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 PM. This will be a 3.5 mile walk on Whetstone Park trails, the bike path and the streets of Clintonville. Everyone is welcome to attend with or without a dog. All dogs must be on non-retractable leashes and must be compatible with other dogs. We will have a pot-luck after the hike at Whetstone Park (we suggest simple finger-food type snacks). Meet at the casting pond (last parking lot in the park). Whetstone Park is located midway between N. Broadway and Henderson Rd. on High Street. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, June 15 -- Chestnut Ridge, Ratings: E/S 2/3

 

Time: 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM. This is a park of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We will hike at an easy pace in a figure 8 pattern for about three miles a session. Meet at the parking lot closest to the fishing pond at 2445 Winchester Rd., NW, Carroll. (270E to 33E, about 11 miles, turn right at Winchester Rd. Entrance is 3 miles on the left. Friday, June 20 -- Highbanks Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Meet outside the Nature Center. Be prepared for some hills as we hike about 3 to 3.5 miles up and down the scenic ravines. There may be warm weather, so please bring some water for the hike. Highbanks is located just west of US 23 about 3.5 miles north of I-270. The Nature Center is the first driveway on the right after you enter the park. Contact leaders for further information.

 

Sunday, June 22 -- Lake Hope, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 9:00 AM. Join us for a 5-7 mile hike around Lake Hope The terrain is rolling with some small but steep hills. Our pace and distance will depend on the weather. The hike includes a brief stop at the Lake Hope Furnace to learn how furnaces in this region were used to make iron for the Civil War. This is a dog-friendly hike. Meet behind McDonald’s at Rte. 33 and Gender Rd. Bring plenty of water, lunch, and hiking boots or sturdy shoes for the sometimes uneven terrain. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, June 27 -- Dublin, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 P.M. Join us for a 3-mile hike starting at Indian Run Falls and traversing downtown Dublin, the river and some of the surrounding neighborhoods. There will be an optional dinner afterwards. Meet in the parking lot of 700 Shawan Falls Dr. Please wear appropriate footwear as we may encounter some muddy areas.
