Tuesday, July 29 -- SWACO Landfill Tour, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 2:00 PM. See where all of your non recycled garbage from Franklin County is dumped. Limit to 14 people for on-site tour, must RSVP via this link Contact leader David Roseman for further information.

 

Friday, August 1 -- Gahanna Creekside Night Hike, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Explore the old and the new of Gahanna as we walk along the boardwalk of Creekside Park. Meet at the VFW Park at 75 W. Johnstown Rd. on the southwest corner of Big Walnut Creek south of Granville Rd. (270 E to 62 E, turn right on Olde Ridenour Rd., then left onto Johnstown Rd. to the creekside). A flashlight and reflective clothing are recommended. Contact leader for further information.

 

Saturday, August 2 -- Water bug collecting and identification, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 10 AM. Get your feet wet in the Olentangy River at High Banks Metro Park 10 AM Sat Aug. 2nd (look for signs). Contact leader Amber Bellamy for further information.

 

Sunday, August 3 -- Battelle Darby Creek, Ratings: E/S 1/3

 

Time: . Meet at 11:00 AM at the Ranger Station at Cedar Ridge which is 2 and 3/4 mile South of Broad St on Darby Creek Dr.The hike will be 6 miles on mostly level terrain. Carry a lunch snack. Contact leader for further information.

 

Wednesday, August 6 -- Franklin Park Conservatory, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 6:30 PM. Enjoy an hour long stroll through this scenic and historic park just 4 miles east of downtown Columbus. Meet inside the east entrance of the Conservatory on the lower level (left of doors).The Conservatory, located at 1777 E. Broad St., is open from 5-8 PM. Contact the Conservatory at (614) 645-8733 for admission information. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, August 8 -- Blendon Woods Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/3

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Meet in the parking lot near the nature center. We will walk for about 3 miles in the woods with rolling hills. There is an optional dinner after the hike. Directions: I-270 to route 161 East, and follow the (brown) signs to the park, and bear left to reach the nature center parking lot. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, August 10 -- Mohican State Park Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 4/4

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This hike of 10+ miles takes us along the trails of the Clear Fork River and ridges that form the Clear Fork Gorge. The gorge originated from the erosion of the moraines, rock till and deposits of the Wisconsinan glacier. Today, the wildlife and forest growth comprise an area designated as a National Natural Landmark. Bring water, lunch, boots, suitable attire and meet in the far end of Targetís parking lot on Polaris Parkway, west of exit # 121 on I-71 north of Columbus. Friday, August 15 -- Sharon Woods Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Meet in the Apple Ridge parking lot at 7 pm. We'll hike through woods, meadows, and around Schrock Lake. Although much of the terrain is flat, be prepared to navigate a few small and possibly muddy hills. Sharon Woods is located north of I-270 at 6911 Cleveland Avenue in Westerville. The Apple Ridge area is the first right from the main park road. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, August 17 -- Granville Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 3/4

 

Time: 10:00 AM. This is a dog friendly hike. The town of Granville offers all the beauty and charm of a New England community. We have a great place for a Sunday hike, with the Denison University campus at the edge of the town. We will be walking about 6 miles throughout the town and campus, and an additional 4 miles in the Denison University Biological Reserve. The pace will be brisk and the hills challenging, so be prepared for a vigorous day. Bring water, lunch, and hiking boots (recommended for the trails in the Reserve). Meet behind Tim Horton's on Cleveland Ave., just north of Route 161. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, August 22 -- Highbanks Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Highbanks is located just west of US 23 about 3.5 miles north of I-270. The Nature Center is the first driveway on the right after you enter the park. Meet outside the Nature Center. Be prepared for some hills as we hike about 3 to 3.5 miles up and down the scenic ravines. There may be warm weather, so please bring some water for the hike. Sunday, August 24 -- Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park Day Hike, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This 6 to 8 hike will begin at scenic Clifton Gorge with many unusual natural sights along the Little Miami River. We'll also read about an incredible escape across the gorge by a member of Daniel Boone's party and . Bring lunch, water, and hiking boots, and meet behind Bob Evans Restaurant at Westland Shopping Center (just east of I-270 and West Broad St.). Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, August 24 -- Annual COG family picnic pot luck, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 1:00 PM. Annual COG family picnic pot luck at Clear Creeks Metro Park Sunday Aug 24 1-5 PM. Please bring a food dish to share. Explore one of the newer Metro parks around Hocking Hills near Lancaster. Contact leader David Roseman for further information.

 

Friday, August 29 -- Dublin, Ratings: E/S 1/1

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Join us for a 3-mile hike starting at Indian Run Falls and traversing downtown Dublin, the river and some of the surrounding neighborhoods. There will be an optional dinner afterwards. Meet in the parking lot of 700 Shawan Falls Dr. Please wear appropriate footwear as we may encounter some muddy areas. A flashlight is a good accessory, too. Sunday, August 31 -- Wildcat Hollow, Ratings: E/S 4/5

 

Time: 9:00 AM. This hike takes place at the Athens district of the Wayne National Forest. We will hike about 10 or 15 miles depending on interest. The ten mile version may also involve hiking in the Burr Oak State Park. The area offers terrain and vegetation typical of the Appalachian foothills of eastern Ohio. Bring water, lunch, boots, suitable attire and meet behind McDonalds at Winchester Square Shopping Center, near US 33 and Gender Road. Contact leader for further information.

Friday, September 5 -- Prairie Oaks Metro Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Join us for a walk in the wood and around the lakes at Prairie Oaks Park. From Columbus, take I-70 west to Plain City-Georgesville/SR-142 exit. Go about .8 miles north to park entrance on right. Meet at the Whispering Oaks picnic area. Optional dinner after the hike. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, September 12 -- Three Creeks/Confluence Park, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. We wil hike past the confluence of Alum , Blacklick ,and Big Walnut Creeks . and enjoy the fauna along the way. Meet at the bulletin board by the restrooms at 3669 Bixby Rd., Groveport. Contact leader for further information.

 

Sunday, September 14 -- Scioto Trails State Park Hike, Ratings: E/S 4/5

 

Time: 9:00 AM. The forest and park are nestled in the high ground of the Appalachian foothills rising above the Scioto River Valley. This historic area was home of the Shawnees as late as the 1700ís and saw the arrival of early American explorers who traveled up the Scioto River. This hike of 11+ miles has most trails in the forest and is comprised of rugged terrain that rapidly descends or rises. While offering expansive views of the area, this is a strenuous hike and may have additional weather-related challenges. Bring water, lunch, boots, suitable attire and meet behind Tim Hortons in the Great Southern Shopping Center on U.S. 23 just north of I-270. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, September 19 -- Gantz Park, Ratings: E/S 1/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. We will meet at Gantz Park, 2255 Home Road, Grove City, 43123. The walk will start with a stroll through the Herb Garden in the park and proceed through the local neighborhood. An optional dinner will take place after the hike. Contact leader for further information.

 

Friday, September 26 -- Worthington, Ratings: E/S 2/2

 

Time: 7:00 PM. Join us for a 3 mile hike in the Old Worthington area. We will walk in and around Old Worthington and through the finest Worthington neighborhoods. Please wear sturdy footwear as we may encounter muddy and uneven ground. The hike will end with an optional dinner at a popular restaurant. Meet in the parking lot behind the Dairy Queen, located 2 blocks north of Route 161, on the east side of High Street. Contact leader for further information.
