Central Ohio Group Issues

This article was submitted for the May / June 2009  issue of the newsletter.

Vote YES on Issue 1—Metro Parks!

On Tues., May 5, Franklin County voters will have the opportunity to approve a 0.75-mill property tax. Metro Parks’ current 0.65-mill 10-year levy expires at the end of 2009. The ballot issue is a proposed 10-year levy that would run until 2019. The cost to the owner of a $100,000 home would be about $23 a year or 6 cents a day. It will provide about $21.5 million/year. The Central Ohio Group is recommending a YES vote for this levy.

Free Admission: The levy will allow Metro Parks to continue to operate the current 15 Metro Parks as clean, well-maintained safe parks that are open daily throughout the year and are free to the public, while continuing to manage natural areas to protect wildlife and water resources.

Education: The levy will allow Metro Parks to continue to provide a wide variety of programs and opportunities that encourage physical and social health, relaxation and enjoyment of the natural world. They will be able to expand educational programs and outreach, focusing on school and urban youth, seniors and special populations.

Acquiring Land: Metro Parks will restore habitat to protect the rare species of Big Darby Creek and secure land adjacent to existing parks. They will work to improve 1,000 acres of wetlands while enhancing existing forests and prairies. Three new parks will be opened:

  • Along Rocky Fork Creek in northwest Franklin County
  • Along Little Walnut Creek near Canal Winchester and Groveport
  • Along the Scioto River in southern Franklin County near Grove City

This is an important opportunity for our parks to acquire land while prices are lower and affordable. Thank you!

The levy will allow Metro Parks to continue to operate the current 15 Metro Parks as clean, well-maintained safe parks that are open daily throughout the year and are free to the public, while continuing to manage natural areas to protect wildlife and water resources.
