Rapidly increasing gas prices,
unemployment rates and economic hardships have Ohioans
more concerned now than ever. A few weeks ago students
from Ohio State University came out to ask their leaders
to step it up and support stronger global warming policy
that will help boost the economy, create jobs and save
consumers money. They were advocating policy that sets
science-based timetables and a cap-and-auctions system,
while pursuing the cleanest, fastest, safest solutions
first—solutions that support workers, protect vulnerable
people and habitats, and induce world action.
The hugely successful gas station
event on May 22 raised heads and educated passers-by.
Much of the success can be attributed to the efforts of
Liz Bourne, a new Sierra Club Building Environmental
Communities (BEC) Intern. Though only having been with
us for a short time, Liz was able to put together a
contingent of OSU student activists who were dedicated
to the preparation, execution of and follow-up to the
event. Working hard every day for a week before the
event, signs were made and letters to our leaders were
sent. Letters to the editor were published. A big ‘thank
you’ goes out to Liz and all of the students who helped
put this event together.
