Emergency Action Taken to
Preserve Sewage Rules
The Delaware Board of Health took
emergency action June 28 to uphold up-to-date standards
for new sewage treatment systems in Delaware County.
This action was taken because the Ohio General Assembly
proposed to rescind new statewide sewage-system rules
enacted earlier this year. The rescission is part of the
state budget bill which became effective on July 1,
2007. Inadequate or malfunctioning sewage treatment
systems can pollute surface and ground water. The
Delaware Board of Health has adopted and updated several
more up-to-date sewage rules reflecting modern science
and technology since the state adopted its 1977 sewage
rules.
Olentangy River Sweep 2007
Over the course of three
hours on June 16, 43 volunteers removed 4,240 pounds of
old junk, tires, and trash from the Olentangy River
channel in Delaware. Very low water levels allowed
volunteers to wade in the river and remove trash
normally concealed by water. The trash included a
300-pound section of steel truss. The sweep was
conducted by Keep Delaware County Beautiful and
supported by several public entities as well as the
Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed, the Scioto
River Valley Federation, and the Ohio Smallmouth
Alliance.
