Sierra Club Community Outreach on Sewers

By , Ohio Sierra Club Water Quality Coordinator
In early 2006 the Sierra Club received a grant from the Columbus Foundation for education and outreach on sewers. This generous support enables Sierra Club staff to offer a free presentation to local neighborhood and environmental groups on sewers and stormwater. There will also be displays at community events that take place through the summer and fall.

Seven presentations were given in the spring, most to local environmental groups.  Columbus is fortunate to have watershed organizations working to enhance local streams and rivers.  Environmental organizations are a natural place to start a presentation on water and sewers.

Sewers are often sited along larger streams in Columbus.

This photo shows the manhole from the sewer under Glen Echo stream and it is located west of High Street at Acadia. Improving stream health in these cases often takes a partnership of the city utility, neighborhood and environmental groups, and committed citizens. Photo by Cyane Gresham.

The presentation is not just for environmentalists, however.  It is designed for the general public.  There are illustrations and photos. Viewers gain understanding of what happens to water leaving their homes, why flooding and overflows happen, and what they can do to protect their neighborhoods.  The presentation is fast-moving, lively, and short! There is time for questions and discussion. Maps and free handouts are provided. The outreach will go beyond environmental groups to neighborhood, community, and civic associations.

The Sierra Club has already participated in three larger community events as a way to reach out to new audiences.  We have participated in a Columbus initiative that takes place in six different areas each year. The Neighborhood Pride Program builds connections to improve communities.

We are producing a colorful brochure and other take-home pieces illustrating the partnership between community, environmental groups, and government working for cleaner waters and reduced flooding.  As the outreach materials develop, they will be integrated with an updated website. Visit the Sewers Campaign website.

As this exciting initiative unfolds, we invite you to contact us. Let us know when and where we can bring the presentation on sewers and clean waters to your group or neighborhood. Have a great summer and enjoy local rivers and streams. Look for us at community events and say hello. Call, email, or write anytime to schedule a free presentation for your community group.
